As the New Year begins, many of us reflect on resolutions that can help us grow personally and professionally. This year, I’m challenging myself and others to think differently—what if your resolution wasn’t just about self-improvement but also about seeing more of the world?

Last summer, I studied abroad in Europe, an experience that forever changed my perspective on life. I got a taste of the world and realized how much there is still to explore. That trip ignited a passion for travel that I’ve carried into the rest of the year.

After studying abroad, I returned to Europe with a few friends over winter break, visiting over 10 countries in just one year. Now, I’m already planning my next adventure—another trip to Europe this summer. How did I do it? A lot of planning, research, and creative budgeting. Here’s what I’ve learned about traveling affordably and how it can transform your life.

How to Travel on a Budget (Even When You’re Broke)

Traveling to so many countries in one year isn’t cheap, but it’s absolutely possible with the right strategies. Here’s how I made it happen:

  1. Plan Ahead 📆

Planning is everything. Before each trip, I broke down my itinerary day by day, listing the activities we wanted to do and how much they’d cost. For example, hikes are free, but museums often require tickets. Most museums offer student discounts, so it’s a great idea to bring your UO student ID with you—even halfway across the world!

Many attractions allow you to buy tickets in advance online, which often saves you money and lets you skip long lines. It’s worth spending time researching discounts or packages to make the most of your trip without overspending.

  1. Use Social Media for Travel Research 📲

TikTok became one of my favorite tools for planning trips. Travel influencers and locals share everything from hidden gems to the best places to eat or explore. It’s a great resource for finding authentic recommendations and off-the-beaten-path adventures.

  1. Stay in Hostels 🏠

Hostels were my favorite places to stay during our trips. Not only were they often cleaner and nicer than some of the Airbnbs and hotels we tried, but they were also incredibly affordable. Hostels are also a great way to meet other travelers and make new friends. Many hostels even host group activities, tours, or communal dinners, creating opportunities to connect with people from all over the world.

  1. Travel During Off-Season ✈️

Avoid peak tourist times to save money on flights, accommodations, and attractions. Traveling in the off-season doesn’t just save you money—it also means fewer crowds, making for a more enjoyable experience.

  1. Leverage Study Abroad Resources 💸

If you’re studying abroad, definitely apply for scholarships! Many schools offer funding to help offset the costs of international programs. Another tip is to look for referral codes for study abroad programs. A quick Google search can often lead you to discounts for flights, accommodations, or other resources.

  1. Take Public Transportation 🚊

Public transportation in Europe is a game-changer. It’s incredibly reliable, safe, and budget-friendly. For example, a 2-euro metro ride can get you where you need to go, compared to a 15-20 euro taxi ride. Even late at night, public transport is busy and safe to use.

To put this into perspective, I once took the metro for 45 minutes with three huge suitcases to get to the airport. If I can do it, you can too! Embracing public transportation saves you money and gives you a more local experience.

  1. Plan Around Cost-Effective Destinations 🗺️

Some destinations are significantly cheaper than others. For instance, Spain is much more affordable than Switzerland. If you’re traveling on a budget, consider basing yourself in a “cheaper” city like Barcelona and planning day trips to nearby destinations.

In Europe, everything is so close that short trips are easy to plan. For example, Morocco and Ibiza are just 1-2 hour flights from Barcelona. By planning strategically, you can visit more places without breaking the bank.

Moments That Make Travel Worthwhile

Europe taught me to slow down and savor life, especially through food. Meals aren’t just about eating—they’re about connection, with dinners stretching for hours filled with laughter and stories. This approach to life hit me the moment I set foot in Europe, where I realized how much of the world I hadn’t explored. That wake-up call sparked my goal to travel more, especially while I’m young. Over the past year, I’ve visited over 10 countries, stepping out of my comfort zone, meeting incredible people, and experiencing breathtaking cultures. Lisbon, in particular, stole my heart with its amazing food, stunning architecture, and unforgettable moments, like sipping drinks in front of a castle. These experiences remind me why traveling is so worthwhile.

How Travel Brings People Together

If you’re nervous about traveling solo, let me tell you—some of the best connections happen when you step out of your comfort zone. During a night out in Barcelona, I met a group of girls in line for the bathroom at a club. They were visiting from London, and while I didn’t think I’d see them again, we exchanged socials.

Fast forward two weeks: I had a 12-hour layover in London. Those same girls met up with me and gave me a local’s tour of the city. That experience taught me the value of making friends wherever you go—you never know when paths might cross again!

Why Travel Is the Best Resolution You Can Make

Travel isn’t just about seeing new places—it’s about becoming a better version of yourself. It teaches adaptability, builds confidence, and gives you a broader perspective on life.

This year, instead of listing resolutions, consider making one simple commitment: travel somewhere new. Whether it’s a nearby city or a country on the other side of the globe, traveling will help you grow in ways you never thought possible.

Where do you want to go next? Share your favorite travel memories or budget-friendly tips in the comments—I’d love to hear your stories!
